How can a tragic story give us hope? On Sunday, we wrapped up the book of 1 Samuel with what appeared to be a sad ending. Saul and his sons are killed, and Israel is defeated by the Philistines. But while this ending is tragic, it isn’t surprising. It is the expected result of Saul’s persistent, unrepentant sin. This is the end of Saul—but it is not the end of the story. God’s true king is still coming. On Sunday morning, we saw how even a tragic ending can point us to lasting hope.
